About Director Charles Honderick

My name is Charles Honderick, filmmaker, producer, musician, man about town.  I was born and raised in Florida.

I have been involved in film production for several years, making short films and music videos. I was looking for a new project and an opportunity arose to make a film about the people of Barnet, a suburb on the edge of London, in the year of the Olympics 2012.

My mother's family are from the London Borough of Barnet and I'd spent a lot of time growing up there, so in a way this film was a labour of love. I wasn't quite sure what direction the film was going to take when it began, but as I interviewed people a story emerged.  I wanted to give the people of Barnet a platform to talk about important local issues and put on record what life is like in this part of London in a year when the eyes of the world are on the great city of  London.

Although it's only a small film, I hope it makes a difference  and helps affect change for the better.

A Tale of Two Barnets

Barnet, site of the famous workhouse from the story Oliver Twist. Two hundred years after the birth of Charles Dickens, how has the area changed and how has it stayed the same?

In 2012, Barnet is faced with the biggest economic crisis since the second world war. The council, faced with budget pressures has embarked on a massive outsourcing program under the title of "One Barnet", which removes all democratic accountability, but keeps all the financial risk. They have sought to plug gaps in finances by bringing in a whole raft of parking charges, which threaten the very existence of the local High street.

The makers of "A Tale of Two Barnets" visited every part of the Borough and allowed the people of Barnet talk about their lives and their concerns in 2012. The film is stark and enlightening.

The film has received National acclaim. It has had the rare privilige of being shown at the House of Commons and has also been shown at the UNISON conference and the TUC in London. Edinburgh UNISON have shown the film during the Internationally acclaimed Edinburgh Festival.

As well as prestigious screenings, the film has had a whole host of local screenings and been shown by various local charities such as the Stroke Association. In total, there have been 23 screenings of the film.

After the screening at the UNISON conference, several delegates commented that they believed the film showed the way forward for campaigns to raise public awareness of issues. High praise indeed.

A short follow up to the film is being made currently, to bring us up to date.
